When it comes to SEO, one thing that you need to truly understand is that robots, not people, rank websites. This means that their ranking will always be based on what they can actually read on your website. It sounds very simple but many people overlook this fact. One element of website copy that is often ignored is the title meta tag. The title meta tag is the most important piece of information that you give to a search engine. It is used to determine what your page is about and is one of the biggest factors used when ranking a site. It is therefore crucial that with Meta SEO you get the this tag right. Let us look at an example of a bad title meta. Example of a poor title meta Let us say that you have a website that specializes in holidays in London and you wanted to write the title Meta tag for an internal page listing hotels in Kensington, for example. A poor title meta tag would read as follows: locate a hotel, holidays and hotels in London, hotels in London, holidays in London, hotels in Kensington, holidays in Kensington, hotels and holidays in Kensington, staying in a hotel in London, staying in a hotel in Kensington. Why is this title wrong? This title meta is not very good for several reasons:
- It is too long. It is generally recommended that title tags are no longer than 60 characters long.
- It uses the same keywords and phrases too many times. In the business this is known as keyword stuffing and if search engines read your site meta tag and see that the same keywords have been used too many times (i.e. there is a high keyword density) they will generally penalize your site and you will find it very hard to gain a high ranking.
- The title starts with the name of the website. This is only really advisable if you have a very famous brand. If you have a new or small website it is better to place the website name at the end of the title meta tag, you may actually wish to leave it out completely in favor of using a keyword or keyword phrase (remember the rule about the length of the title meta tag).
- The tag does not actually read very well. When people are presented with search engine results the text contained within the title meta tag is presented. When presented with a title in this form many users will be overwhelmed by the sheer number of keywords and will probably ignore it because it looks unprofessional and amateurish
- The use of the keyword phrases, “staying in a hotel in London” and “staying in a hotel in Kensington” are particularly bad. Try and avoid using words “the”, “a”, “as” and “of”.
- The tag has not been written in Title Case, or Proper Case as it is often referred.
Example of a good title tag A more effective title meta would appear as follows. Holidays in London > Hotels in London > Hotels in Kensington Why is this meta tag so good? This title tag is effective for several reasons:
- It is short and falls within the 70-character recommendation.
- It presents three keywords that clearly represent what the page is about. They are easy to read and understand and look professional. Anyone searching the web is instantly given context to the page content and this will increase click through rate.
- Three keyword phrases are used and no single word appears more than twice.
- The title meta is written in proper case.
